The Client Connection

by Leslie Hatcher, Client Services DirectorAs I trained a new group of volunteers, I was reminded of just how challenging the work of crisis pregnancy counseling can be. Young women come to us scared and heartbroken in the midst of a life-altering crisis. They are presented the truth with compassion and understanding by the staff and volunteers of First Choice for Women.Although this column is typically filled with the positive outcomes of the work of First Choice, sadly, that is not always the case. Not long ago, a young Ball State sophomore volunteered at First Choice with a student organization. She would come in with two or three other girls to clean toys and wash clothes. As the school year drew to a close, this young woman found herself facing an unplanned pregnancy, but she knew exactly where to go for help. Accompanied by four roommates, the group listened as I presented options and described the new life growing inside of her. She sat in silence, tears rolling down her cheeks as I detailed fetal development. In spite of my counsel, she felt her situation allowed no option but termination. As she and her friends left that day, I told her that I would call to check on her and that the staff and volunteers of First Choice would be here for continued support and counsel, no matter what she chose.During one of our follow-up phone conversations, she informed me that she had decided to terminate. I assured her that I would be here should she need to talk. She politely thanked me for the time we had spent together and for the detailed information she had received. The client then promised to come back to First Choice to volunteer next fall with her student organization! I cannot wait to see her and show her that our love and concern for her does not simply end after the pregnancy.Although not all appointments end in a choice for life, all who come to us hear the truth about life. So what may not seem like a success can still be used for God’s glory!Kathryn ScheibeScheibeTaylor University social work major, Kathryn Scheibe, completed her internship at First Choice for Women this spring. Kathryn was a great addition to First Choice, assisting in Parent Care, Creating Positive Relationships and fundraising. As she is expecting a baby herself, we blessed Kathryn with a handmade baby blanket donated by Union Chapel Ministries as a farewell gift.Angela and James Parksangela-parksWhat a blessing when we have the opportunity to mentor a couple from the positive pregnancy test to the birth of their child! Angela and James Parks came to First Choice for Parent Care in February of 2014, expecting twins. Sadly, Angela suffered a miscarriage. The staff and volunteers offered prayer and comfort during that difficult time, but when the Parks found themselves pregnant again, we rejoiced! Their Parent Care Advocate, Nancy Dillard, met with them each week as they prepared for their precious daughter, born May, 2015.Please continue to pray for First Choice for Women as we move toward offering ultrasound services to our clients. Praise be to God for His faithfulness and provision!
