Saving and Changing Lives for 30 years!
We are so excited to celebrate the 30th anniversary of First Choice for Women! The impact the center has made over the span of three decades can only be imagined…How many lives have been saved? How many hearts changed? How many people helped? It is hard to say for certain, but undoubtedly thousands upon thousands have been served by this ministry throughout Muncie, Delaware County and its surrounding areas.Early in 1986 a group of likeminded individuals saw a need in the community and met at the Kehoe residence to discuss the ways and means of establishing a crisis pregnancy center in Muncie. With the first donation to the ministry provided by Judy Galliher, the tiny nonprofit became a reality. A few months later, upon the payment of a $26 filing fee, Bill Shuman signed and filed the incorporation documents that made Heart to Heart Crisis Pregnancy Center an official organization (initially located at 229 Hoyt Avenue in Muncie Indiana).Over the past 30 years the ministry has gone through many changes; we’ve moved to different locations; undergone a couple of name changes; added new programs; and watched hundreds of volunteers and employees come and go. But amidst all these changes, the heart and mission of the ministry has remained the same.Interestingly, while researching the history of First Choice, I came across a document dated March 15, 1986. These minutes outlined the initial mission of the ministry:
- Save lives.
- Provide support in time, money and effort to mother and child.
- Present the Gospel in both word and deed.
- Become an educational agency in the city.
Thirty years later, these four goals are still the heart and soul of the ministry. Item number 3 in particularly, sharing the Gospel, was, and continues to be, interwoven into all that we do here at First Choice. The remaining objectives have been realized through:
- Options Counseling
- Ultrasound Technology
- Practical Needs Assistance
- Parent Care Lessons
- Sexual Risk Avoidance
