SRA 2016

by Sharyll Martin, SRA DirectorSharyll Martin,

The goal of the Sexual Risk Avoidance program is to help middle school students build healthy futures and high school students to choose healthy lifestyles. Here's what’s happened in 2016, by the numbers:

  • 1,314 students participated in the 2016 spring semester of abstinence education program
  •  974 of those students chose sexual abstinence
  •  143 chose secondary abstinence
  •  18 middle and high schools were served in Delaware County
  •  2 new schools were added to the calendar for the upcoming fall semester
  • 1 youth organization, outside Delaware County, was added to the summer program
  • 2 new individuals will be attending training this July to become SRA Instructors, bringing our total number of available instructors for the 2016-2017 school year to 6

Although there are many things I enjoy about the SRA program, one of my favorites is the student comments. Here are just a few I’d like to share with you from the high-schoolers this past semester.

Delta Male: “Through the CPR Program, I have learned much more in depth about how to have healthy relationships. Given that I haven't dated yet, I wanted to make my first girlfriend one who lasts…you helped to reaffirm and add to my idea of a healthy relationship, thanks!”

Delta Female: “I think this class has helped a lot of people realize what a positive relationship is and how serious STDs are. I think that it’s a very good program”.

Wes-Del Female: “I learned about different diseases; some I didn't even know about. I now understand why I need to be safe. Every sophomore should hear this.”

Wes-Del Male: “I learned about multiple types of STDs and how bad they really are. I now know the importance of abstinence.”

When I see comments like these I have to smile, because it affirms that the SRA Creating Positive Relationships curriculum is making a real difference in our community. It is so important that these young people understand what truly constitutes a healthy relationship, what risks are involved (both mentally and physically) in a sexual relationship, and that being abstinent until marriage is the best option for them. For these reasons and more, SRA needs to be in our schools and youth organizations, and thanks to you it can be. It is your prayers and partnerships that allow us to continue this vital service to our youth.

Thank you!
