All About Abstinence
Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) is an abstinence based curriculum that is offered completely free of charge to multiple school systems within Delaware County. Currently presented in 10 different schools within our community, the program has reached over 1,250, 6th-12th grade students during the first semester of the 2013-2014 school year. The CPR course focuses on fostering the development of good decision making skills in all areas of the students’ lives, including sexual behavior. Some of the topics covered in the program include: goal setting, respecting oneself and others, planning for dating, setting safe limits for physical affection, and resisting peer pressure. From these topics abstinence is taught as “saving all sexual relations until marriage.” Of the students who participated in the Creating Positive Relationships program this school year, 89% have chosen abstinence as the best choice for them. First Choice for Women believes that educating our young people is a crucial step in preventing unplanned pregnancies, and we could not do it without your support. The affirmation of the importance of the Abstinence Program, can be found in the following student quotes“This entire program has completely changed me. I know that abstinence is the right path and I’m ready to walk it.”~Delta High School Male“I’m planning on being secondary abstinent from now on until marriage, because I’ve had sex before, and now I’m like, Geez, no more sex for a long time”.~Yorktown High School Male“This is a good course for 6th graders because it will be too late if you don’t teach it now”~Yorktown Middle School Student“This is a good course for 7th graders. If my friend was considering sexual activity, I would tell them… don’t do it. Save it for marriage. You don’t want to get an STD or a baby”~Cowan Jr.-Sr. StudentIf you or anyone you know are interested in learning more about how to become involved in the Creating Positive Relationships Program, please contact Melissa Hinds, Abstinence Director at melissa@firstchoiceforwomen.org.
