Exciting Times in Abstinence!
by Sharyll Martin, SRA Director
Luke 6:31 says we should treat others the way we want to be treated. This is one of the important objectives of our sexual risk avoidance curriculum, (otherwise known as Creating Positive Relationships or CPR). When youth and teens understand how their relationships can impact them now, and in their future, they embrace the idea of pursuing positive ways to enhance their relationships. Sometimes they realize they need to abandon negative relationships as well.
What’s Happening in 2016?
This semester our instructors will stand before more than 1,200 students from 6th grade to high school. Currently we are presenting CPR lessons in nearly every middle and high school in Delaware County, including: Liberty-Perry Schools, Delta, Cowan, Burris, Muncie Community Middle Schools, Daleville, Wes-Del, Pope John Paul II Middle School, and Inspire Academy. (Although Muncie Central High School dropped the program this school year, we are trying to get back on the schedule for the Fall Semester.)
Burris, Daleville, Pope John Paul II Middle School and Inspire Academy are all new additions this year! We have also made contacts at Heritage Hall and Delaware Christian Academy. We hope to build on these relationships and continue to develop and grow the program.
SRA is also expanding outside of the traditional classroom setting with its summer program! We are moving forward with a course for the Boys and Girls Club of Muncie, and we will be back at the Gas City Boys' Home again this summer. It would be awesome to be able to meet with church youth groups throughout the summer as well. As one of our 2016 goals, we could use your help bringing this to fruition - please let your youth pastor know that this faith based curriculum is available, customizable and free!
We are very excited about the progress we are seeing this year, and believe that the sexual risk avoidance curriculum is an innovative, proactive approach to eliminating unwanted pregnancies and educating young people about the emotional and physical impact of premarital sexual relationships.
Is CPR working?
Yes, it is! Our statistics show that over 90% of all students who were in a CPR class last fall chose abstinence as a lifestyle. Furthermore, we saw an 8% increase in knowledge levels for these same students. That's worth cheering about! Hooray!
Did you know?
A little-known fact is that teachers in area private and public schools can be certified instructors in Creating Positive Relationships! First Choice will pay for their training and transportation to Indianapolis. We will also pay for a substitute teacher to cover their class while they are away!
Why be a CPR instructor?
Understanding how our youth think about sexuality and their peers gives you a unique opportunity to help them make better and safer choices for whole-person health. And it’s FUN! Please connect with me if you are interested in making a difference in the lives of our local youth.
